Some points I'd like to make after the Armani Bear['s education of Fulmer]*

Not feeling well today, so the Monday morning stuff will have to wait until this afternoon or tomorrow. Thanks to Rusty for the following diary, and apologies to him for having to Fulmerize (TM!)* part of it. -- ed. *Ful·mer·ize - verb (used with object)

1. to reduce profanities and/or obscenities to a PG or lower rating by substituting for such profanity and/or obscenity a word commonly used by Tennessee Volunteer football coach Phillip Fulmer.

  • At least things aren't as bad for UT they are for Notre Dame, which has undergone perhaps the most horrific collapse in the program's history. A 38-0 shellacking by USC doesn't even register on the trauma scale this year.
  • At least things aren't as bad for UT as they are for Texas A&M, where the coach is about to be fired for losing a lot of games and for selling gambling secrets to boosters by way of a double-secret newsletter.
  • At least things aren't as bad for UT as they are for Nebraska, where the coach is a dead man walking after the AD that hired him was fired for the football program's collapse. And after he (says a fired trainer) called the interim AD, most super-duper Huskers coach of all time, statesman, and all-around grandfather figure Tom Osbourne "that crusty old [jerk] [Coach Callahan, you've been Fulmerized! -- ed.]." And alienated ex-players. And was blown out 36-14 yesterday by the atrocious Texas A&M team from the last bullet point.

No, this is just run-of-the-mill jumping the shark and losing the confidence of the fan base, not something particularly catastrophic by measure on this year's scale.

Despite gross coaching incompetence in all major games but one, UT still has an outside chance at contending for the SEC East. But someone (ahem, Georgia) would have to beat Florida, and UT would have to beat South Carolina, Arkansas, Kentucky and Vandy. I'm tempted to say Florida can punch their card to rematch LSU in the SEC title game, but things have been strange this year. I'm done with predictions.

Good points
I was gonna make a similar entry to this, focusing on the fact that at least we're not ND!  How bad do you think UCLA feels for being the ONLY team to loose to ND this year?

I think everybody in the east will drop another one (UF included).  With that said, I think UF still gets in.  Out in the west, LSU will drop another too.  They're (Les Miles) is getting too cocky and it'll cost them sooner than later.

I love this sport...even when my team struggles.

Cal
UCLA loses to ND, and then does what UT failed to do against Cal. Go figure.

Sometimes you just have to walk through the valley
Man. That was ugly. It just renews my extreme dislike for Bama. Of course, I never really did like them to begin with. As for as our performance, only one word comes to mind: unacceptable. But, then again, the guys on the team feel it worse than we mere observers ever could. So where do we go from here? Coaching change? I don't know. Not my call. But, I will say this...if everyone I talked to can point out the absurdity of having a true freshman in the game for a 3rd and 1 while keeping Arian Foster and LaMarcus Coker on the bench and then not going for it on 4th down near midfield, then there is a major problem up there. But, I am not a coach. I love my Vols no matter what and I will still be there to yell my head off against Spurrier. Here's hoping we come out pissed off and ready to make someone pay for this. And yes, one day the Big Orange will stand atop the College Football landscape once again and make everyone VERY sorry that they even took the field. Sometimes you have to go through the valley to appreciate the mountain top. Go Vols...always!

Agreed
I would hesitate to agree with anyone on firing Fulmer. We have the most winning coach in the NCAA. We've also had a winning season more or less every single year. So we haven't had a Championship in a while. Big deal. Neither has scores of other teams. Some of them much longer than we. So we got trounced in a rivalry game. Thats why its a rivalry game, and lets face it Alabama is no slouch. In every game someone has to win, and someone has to lose. Maybe I'm skewed being stuck in Arkansas, where they actually have a coach who is completely worthless, needs to be fired, and makes blatant errors regularly then blames the players. So I'm forced to compare Fulmer against Houston Nutt.
